Workouts and Hunger

I've recently (as of last Friday) started a workout regimen and I've been having a problem.  I get so hungry after I work out! I have been doing anywhere between 40 minutes to 80 minutes for workout, mixing cardio and weight lifting, so I'm going to have to find some sort of alternative to stuffing my face after I get home.

The other day I had an almond and apple sauce post-workout snack.  What do you suggest? I heard mixing carbohydrates and proteins is perfect for a mixture of replenishing quick energy and longer-lasting energy.

On other news, I'm in a rut. I want to create something yummy, but I have no money! It's a problem.  But I do promise that after I get my next pay check and after I pay rent, there will be a yummy recipe to follow!! Right now I'm living off of random vegetables, leftovers, and random things I can steal from my friends!

  1. Hmmm...how about some edamame beans, a whole apple and a piece of toast? And I understand the money constraint. It is no fun!

  2. I can totally relate. I am a runner and whenever I increase my training I get hungry. I ran a marathon earlier this year and I swear I was eating all the time. Try drinking chocolate milk (low fat or skim) after working out, it will help replace nutrients. Protein will you feel less hungry. Make sure you are also drinking lots of water. Sometimes dehydration can seems like hunger and all your body needs is water.

  4. Hey Katherine, it's really important after a workout to get the proper proteins! The starches will help your typical hunger, but that intense feeling of hunger after a workout is spurred by your muscles that need an array of proteins to heal (working out tears your muscles and the healing is what creates bulk or firmness depending on the exercises your'e doing-as you may already know). An organic nut & oatmeal bar with a glass of soy milk is ideal and will not 'undo' your great workout. A piece of fresh fruit thrown on the scene is even batter and delicious too (smile)! I put this stuff in my Cauldron Boy's gym bag and it works-he loves it.
    p.s. Monet's suggestion is great too if you're okay with cooking a bit. Hope this helps...!

    I totally agree that finding hunger-quenching, healthy snacks is tough! From what I gather, the snacks need to balance sugar and fat (good fat, of course), meaning don't just eat an apple, but rather eat an apple and some cheese or nuts (which will also provide you with some protein!). Good luck with all the training!

  7. How about making some homemade hummus? The beans are super inexpensive, and pack a ton of protein. Good luck!
